R. Carlos Nakai, American Native Flutist: ***
R. Carlos Nakai brings a unique sensibility to his solo engagements with symphonies. His melding of the Native flute with orchestral instruments requires artistry
that understands two separate musical traditions while mastering the technical demands of both.
Considered the world's premier performer of the Native flute, Nakai holds the distinction of being the only American Native performing in the Indigenous genre to have a Platinum Record-Canyon Trilogy- with over one million sold. He serves as an effective ambassador in reaching new concert audiences, consistently drawing capacity or near capacity houses.
Nakai has a successful career in many genres of music. He is an eleven-time Grammy®
nominee who has many fans that follow him into the concert hall. He has the distinction
of attracting many Native Americans who are first-time concertgoers to the symphony.
Nakai has soloed with over fifty professional orchestras including the Philadelphia
Orchestra as well as the symphonies of Phoenix, Anchorage, Omaha, and Tallahassee.
Nakai has a collection of compositions for solo Native flute and orchestra, most of which
can be found on these recordings: Inner Voices, Fourth World and Two World
Concerto albums. Charts are available for rental.

Robert Sims: ****
Robert Sims is an acclaimed American baritone celebrated for his rich, expressive voice
and commitment to preserving African American spirituals. A winner of the Gold Medal
at the American Traditions Competition, Sims has performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln
Center, and the Kennedy Center, as well as internationally with renowned orchestras
and opera companies. He is recognized for his interpretations of spirituals and art
songs, working closely with composers like Moses Hogan, Lena McLin, and Jacqueline
Hairston. Beyond performance, Sims is a respected educator and advocate for cultural
diversity in music, inspiring audiences and students alike with his artistry, scholarship,
and dedication to the vocal arts.

“Sims knows how to merge European operatic grandeur with colloquial, all-American delivery. The ardor of his interpretation and plushness of his timbre, as well as his wholly convincing body language, made his performance a high point of the night.”
- Chicago Tribune
Cultural Crossroads: DvoÅ™ák in America: **
Cultural Crossroads: DvoÅ™ák in America is a live concert experience that explores the Black and Indigenous influences on DvoÅ™ák during his time in America. The program weaves original Native American melodies and moving African American Spirituals along with DvoÅ™ák’s beloved "New World Symphony". Short videos and imagery add to this powerful multimedia experience. Cultural Crossroads: DvoÅ™ák in America, featuring R. Carlos Nakai on Native flute, Kenneth Kellogg, bass, and Pamela Freund- Striplen as narrator, is a catalyst for audience engagement as it entertains, educates, and inspires, drawn from the curiosity of a Czech composer a century ago.
